Bright Spot Friday: Nina D. has been a member at CFH from the beginning. She was introduced to CrossFit through Jess D. when we first opened. I remember Jess telling us that she had a coworker that was kind of interested, but not so sure if it was going to be for her. Well, Nina stuck with it and has made some amazing progress over the last three years. One of her goals in the beginning was to get an unassisted pull up. She showed up for class 3-4 times a week, but could not seem to develop the strength for it. Finally she had enough and decided to start seeking out the coaches for advice and help. As a team we came up with plan and had her stick to it. Now this all sounds easy so far, but I want to put this into perspective. Nina had been here for about 2 years and six months. She saw people get pull ups, chest to bar and muscle ups who joined after her. She watched ladies throw themselves up and over on the rings and guys muscle their way through pull ups after one day of practice. The easy thing to do would be to quit. People do it all the time- “This is hard, I am uncomfortable, back to sitting on machines and getting mediocre results.” Instead of quitting, bitching and moaning and blaming it on other things she took a big bite of humble pie (not an easy thing to do) and asked for advice. Then the even harder part, taking action on the advice she was given.
For 6 months Nina was doing barbell pull ups and negatives in workouts, never questioning the processes or using the band because she wanted to, or trying to half ass pull ups because she almost had them. She spent 6 months developing strength and following the plan. And damn did it pay off. I could not be more stoked for her! Last night she nailed her first pull up! She went on to do about 15 more throughout the workout. Nina does not jump up and yell and scream when she hits a PR. If we did not write about it you would probably never know about all the work she put in. But, if you see her in the gym give her a high five and hug. She deserves some love!
Nina on the approach!
