Nutrition Spotlight – It’s a Marathon not a sprint

Long lasting change requires a shift in your perspective – not just a shift in your behavior. Think back to when you started CrossFit— maybe you have always loved working out and being physically fit. For some of us, this is a new phenomenon. If you are in the latter category and now consistently come to CrossFit and look forward to it— you underwent some type of mental transformation whether you realize it or not. Somewhere along the way, you stopped looking at exercise as a method of torture or self punishment for all those donuts you ate, and started to look at it as something positive.

The same thing can occur when it comes to nutrition. A simple shift in the way you view healthy eating can go a long way. Having the choice to eat food that is nourishing and healthy is an immense gift that some people lack.

I recently worked with Mark F, who has been a member at CFH for a while now. Mark didn’t come to me with any grand goals of massive weight loss or making it to the CrossFit games. He was looking to improve his knowledge of nutrition and make healthier choices that would increase his energy levels and performance at the gym. Mark, like many of us, has a pretty hectic work life so we did the best we could given the uncertainty and variability in his schedule. We took a transitional approach, easing into lifestyle changes one week at a time that would be long-lasting, as opposed to immediately implementing a restrictive diet.

“We picked our battles knowing that at times I would always be struggling with proper sleep and coffee consumption.  I am definitely a novice when it comes to nutrition, especially the science aspect of it and I feel like you gave me a good knowledge base to help me make good decisions with my diet and not overwhelm me.  I thought all of our meetings were great and very informative, I liked how each week there was something new to work on and incorporate.” -Mark

Everybody is different. What worked for Mark might not work for someone else. What Mark and I achieved, and what I hope to achieve with all clients is a shift in perspective that will enable you to achieve your goals, and maintain them, for years to come.
