CFH Core Values post series continues brought to you this week by Coach Marissa!
Education
Education – with humility, we take the initiative to understand each other’s’ experiences and perspectives and to act, work and develop from the insights we gain. We are open to new advice and will always be a student in all facets of life.
Each day that we step through the doors of CrossFit Federal Hill, we come with an open mind and open body to learn and accept new knowledge so that the next day we can become better athletes and create our best selves. For some this means working out to maintain a fit and functional lifestyle, while for others it is pushing to become competitive athletes. Whatever the goal may be, we all benefit from acquiring new skills and strengths that build cumulatively towards our desired outcome.
As athletes, we must listen, respect and challenge ourselves, as well as those training us. To do this means being open to the knowledge and perspectives that coaches and other athletes present. Their expertise is to our benefit, and we should always feel welcome to ask questions, get help with movements and attain programing or nutrition information that will help us achieve our specific goals. In turn, we must utilize the advice provided and challenge ourselves to refine our movement patterns so that we can move more safely and efficiently. Likewise, we must try to help others where our experience and expertise can be of use. Eventually, it is incumbent to provide feedback so that those teaching can learn what works for particular athletes.
As coaches, it is our responsibility to lead our community towards their fitness goals. To do this, we must work to elevate our knowledge of those movements that contribute to functional and competitive fitness regimens. For some coaches this may mean taking specialized formal courses and certifications that can bring expertise to the gym and serve as a valuable resource. Nonetheless, all coaches should be constantly striving to more fully understand the movements we perform at CFH through informational videos, websites and technical literature. Finally, one of our greatest resources are our own members. They come from a range of different backgrounds and athletic capabilities, and their strengths and weakness can teach us so much about how the body moves and how we can teach others accordingly.
Each athlete has his or her own unique perspective and story. Through compassion and understanding, we strive to learn from each other’s capabilities, develop as individuals and help others to progress both inside and outside of the gym. Together, will make us stronger and bring us together as a community at CFH.
