We are almost finished with our CFH Core Values blog series. This week it’s about Unity, written by Coach Blair.
Unity – We work everyday to develop a supportive and strong community. We are loyal to our friends, family, co-workers and teammates. We always put others first and live a life full of pride with humility.
The word strong can be used in so many different parts of our lives. I am strong because I can clean and jerk 155lbs. I am strong because I can hold back tears when I watch the video of the soldier surprising his kid at school after being deployed all year (well, I’m not that strong, but maybe someone is). When I read the word strong in the value of Unity, I it takes on a whole new meaning.
The community built at Crossfit Federal Hill is strong, yes because there are muscles at every turn, but more importantly, because of the relationships that are built. As a coach, there’s no better feeling than watching the last person finish a workout with the sound of cheers, applause, encouragement, and community surrounding that athlete. Everyone is tired, feels like they’re going to pass out or throw up; all they want is to be laid out in that prime spot in front of the fan. Instead, they have put their pain aside to stand beside their fellow athlete. 7 minutes or 20 minutes, we all finish together. That is Unity.
“We always put others first and live a life full of pride with humility.” Where else do you celebrate your first muscle up and then turn around and feel just as much joy when the person next to you completes their first double under? If you were around when Glenn got his first hand stand pushup during the 2015 Open, you know this feeling. I can still remember being mid-WOD and stopping to watch him celebrate. It was nearly impossible not to get goose bumps before getting back to working out. I didn’t care that I wasted a few seconds; it was worth every missed rep to be able to share that moment with him. CrossFit teaches us to put our own successes aside and celebrate the accomplishments of others.
I started at CFH in, what I refer to as, the “Half-Gym” days. The main gym was still an antique shop and the 50 or so members squeezed their barbells into the back half of the gym. I met people who are now my closest friends. I’ve been to their weddings, their baby showers, and even my own wedding to a man that I met sitting on a bench in the “Half-Gym”. To say that the community here is supportive and strong is an understatement. There used to be a sticker to the entrance of the “half-gym” that stated, “The best hour of your day starts now”. That was, and still is, the truest statement you could make about CrossFit Federal Hill.

Common Questions
-Can I miss a few classes? There will be 12 classes over six weeks try to make at least 9 of them.
-90 minutes is a long class? This is includes warm up and giving enough time for Marissa to give everyone feedback. If you need to cut out early that is fine.
-What if I am a beginner? No problem, this class is for beginner and advanced lifters.
-Can I still CrossFit? Of course, Marissa will be designing workouts so you still have time and energy to fit in a few WODs.
