Barbell Club has been live for six weeks at CFHE!!!!
We’re seeing great strides from all of the members. We thought it would be helpful to share some insight into the club by sharing some stories from a few of the athletes. Over the next few weeks we’ll provide some updates from our members. First up is Julia Cohn!
Julia was only able to join us for the first four weeks due to her schedule with work changing in May. Julia attended over 90% of the classes offered during the month and was a very coachable and motivated athlete to work with. We are super proud of her progress in the short time we had!
What did you want to get out of Barbell Club?
“I wanted to get more comfortable doing Olympic lifts in general, specifically more comfortable catching a clean or snatch in a full squat position.I was kind of afraid of snatching, I knew my technique was lacking and I didn’t want to be hurting myself and to be less scared of putting heavy weight over my head. I wanted to get overall a bit stronger.”
What did you learn from participating in Barbell Club?
“The best thing I learned from barbell club is that I can’t (over)think my way into a perfect lift. I can listen to my Coaches cues, but at the end of the day I have to just do it… and then do it again and again to get better. I also learned to not be afraid of failing a lift, because I’ve done it now (a lot) and I know how to dump the bar, and how to reassess, take a breathe, come back to the bar and successfully do that weight!
“I also got WAY more comfortable catching a lift in the bottom/squat position of the clean, snatch and OHS. Though I still sometimes will catch in a power position, I know if I actually focus I can do it over again and get it.”
Let’s talk numbers:
First Day of Barbell Club:
- 1 RM Snatch – 95# Power
- 1 RM Clean and Jerk – 145# (full clean – meaning squat)
- 5 RM Back Squat – 185#
Last Day of Barbell Club:
- Snatch Complex (1 Full Snatch + 1 OHS) 100#
- Clean and Jerk Complex (2 Full Cleans + 1 Jerk) 145# (Julia also hit 125 for a 3RM at a competition a week after her last class with us. Go Julia!)
- Back Squat 5 RM – 200#
Check out Julia’s improved technique from day one to day 21 in the following clip!
Day 1 – 1 RM Snatch at 95# (Start position of the hip/butt a bit high, no tension drawing back. In overhead, head stays back with bar forward of frontal plane resulting in lack of stabilization through the lats, shoulders, back)
Day 21 – 1 Snatch + 1 OHS complex at 85# (Hip/butt slightly lower, more tension drawing back off the ground engaging hammies and glutes, head comes through in overhead maintaining frontal plane)

Congratulations, Julia, on setting goals and meeting them through hard work! Your positive attitude and energy is contagious and we’re proud to have you as part of the Industry Athletics family.
