Intentional Hardship – Why You Should Do More Hard Things

When it comes to working out and physically pushing your limits most people who are reading this have a step up on the general population. You choose to make fitness a priority in life.  You choose to get uncomfortable, lift heavy weights, sweat in front of others and lay on the floor like a child who is throwing a tantrum after a 7 minute workout.

The next level up is coming to workouts that you know will be so challenging that you will question, if the creator of such workouts is actually the devil.  The best example has to be the assault bike.  If you are reading this and you have not been on one just stop in CFH and ask to do a 1 minute sprint on the assault bike.  It must be a head down all out sprint.  We promise it will change your life. Now for those of you that have had this life changing experience we all know it is hard. But, do you avoid it? Knowing it will make you better, but fearing the burn your lungs will have to fight through.  What gravitational pull in your mind is stronger, the desire to improve or the want to avoid pain?

Just like your biceps, your mind is a muscle that needs to be trained.  The more decisions you make that intentionally put hardship on your life the better you will get at them. The really cool part is that this stuff translates to everything you do outside of the gym.

If you develop the mental capacity to not only endure a hard workout, but show up on hard days it will trickle down to making decisions about food, money, relationships and life.  A purchase that you should or should not make because it’s easier to avoid. And a hard business or life decision becomes easier because of your previous experiences.

It is more powerful than we are aware of, when we consciously do hard things.  It is easier to drive to the store, but what if you walked.  In the cold, brought a bag and lugged home your groceries.  Too far? Get a bike.  What if you consciously took the stairs up to the 20th floor in your office everyday?  I challenge you endure hardship intentionally.  Face the hard conversation at work, make a relationship decision that you have been avoiding and come in for every single damn assault bike workout that you can. Do hard things so when the really hard ones come up your body and mind have been trained to execute and not avoid.
