We all got into CrossFit for self improvement. It usually starts as a positive journey. Beginner gainz are the best right!? I added 50 lbs to my back squat in two weeks! I went from 1 pull up to 10 pull ups. Then after a while it becomes harder. After a while you begin to think “I am good at this? This is getting harder.” Maybe it is running or gymnastics or weightlifting that feels like a punch in the gut. Sometimes it turns into everything.
Here’s the thing, negativity will bring down the whole group. It is like second hand smoke or a raging wildfire. It spreads quickly and affects everyone. “Ughhh we have so many wall balls in the workout today, it’s going to be sooo hard.” This sets the tone for you and everyone around you that is listening.
Internally this type of talking rationalizes you not living up to your full potential. Negativity is an excuse for not tackling the problem head on. The more you do this the more you will find yourself making excuses instead of attacking issues. No matter what level you are on, there is no room for negative comments, excuses or complaining. Next time you feel one of these things about to come out of your mouth grab it, bring it back in and think about how you can turn that around.
Ramon was not born to run and Sarah was not born with a big squat. They work on them. Ramon runs a lot and Sarah squats a lot. We all know this. You know you must work on things to improve them. But the easy way out is to think “I am just not good at that.”
How can you possibly perform your best, make improvements and move in an upward direction when you are using resources to whine and complain. It is not about a fake smile and mentally lifting the weight up that makes you stronger. It is not about being sarcastic “Yay, 100 thrusters today, I am sooo happy.” It is about recognizing the negative energy. It is about enjoying the processes. It is about embracing weaknesses, not comparing yourself to others and constantly pursuing excellence.
Be a part of the solution. Be someone who drives things forward not backwards. Be positive.
If we work on this as a community we will continue reach the best version of ourselves physically and mentally.
