Harbor East

Athlete Spotlight – Gabby Judd

Gabby has been a member of CrossFit Harbor East for about 6 months.  This year she made two goals for 2018.  It’s April and she’s accomplished both of those goals: a 300# back squat and strict pull ups.  Read about her hard work and road to success!

My two fitness goals for the year this year were to get a strict pull up and to squat 300 lb+. By February I obtained my pull up and by March I hit a 305 lb back squat. I was shocked at how quickly I was able to achieve these goals as they weren’t “easy” (I could barely get halfway up on a pull up and my max squat was 270 lb by the end of the year).
I think I can attribute my quick success to two factors; my own tenacity and drive/stubbornness and the support of my fellow gym members. I am very goal oriented and driven so once I have something in mind to achieve I start to tackle it right away. I stayed committed in my efforts, coming to the gym every day, doing our scheduled workouts but then staying and working on my own specific drills/strength pieces/etc to help reach my goals. With this comes the second reason why I think I succeed so quickly. My fellow gym members, including the coaches saw that I was putting in the time to do the extra work needed to reach my fitness goals so if at any time I had a question or wanted some advice they were all more than happy to stay after class for a bit and work through things with me or provide me with more drills or a routine to help me reach my goals. I’d like to give big shot outs to coaches Brittany Ghiroli, Nicole, Jamie and Carey for being so supportive of me and lending me their expertise whenever I needed it!
This story is also a prime example of how and why I’ve grown to love CrossFit. I have been active and working out the majority of my life. I was a gymnast for 12 years, and competed it as well as cheer leading and club soccer. Since college I had been focused in the gym starting with body building and HIIT type workouts, for the last year or so I had been getting into powerlifting as well. I started coming to CrossFit actually about one month before Geo took over ownership of CFHE, so for about 6 months now. I was fairly skeptical of CrossFit and didn’t really see what all the hype was about but thought I’d stick around and give it a try and I’m so glad I did. The comradery, community and friendships that are built in such a short period of time is astounding. Right from the beginning I felt welcomed and supported not only by coaches but by all the members; it reminded me of my younger days growing up on sports teams and the bonds you develop with your teammates.
I am happy to say that the thing I look forward to most in my days every day is coming to CrossFit and getting in a good sweat with all my friends. I am currently starting to think about a new set of goals in the gym for the rest of the year, I’m thinking a 200 lb+ clean 🙂

What made you decide to give CrossFit a try? At the time I was looking for something that would challenge me and make me actually excited to workout. I knew member Laurie Davidow from work and she posted about the Fresh Start Challenge on Facebook. It caught my eye because it was for women only and I felt less intimidated to try it out.

How have your feelings towards CrossFit changed from when you first started to now? The fact that it’s not intimidating at all and you can certainly go at your own speed. The workouts can be scaled, but everyone gives 100% effort.

How has CrossFit helped you develop good friendships? Seeing Sarah <Matz> everyday certainly helps ha. In all honesty, it’s a shared experience inside and outside the gym. We have a lot in common and sharing an experience that challenges and motivates you only supports our friendship. It’s not just the burpees and cleans that make you a stronger and healthier person, but it’s the people you hang out with too.

How has being involved in the community made you more consistent with CrossFit?  I love coming everyday and knowing Sarah and other members will be there to challenge me. Stressful situations can build strong bonds. CrossFit can be both physical and mentally demanding and it’s good to know you’re doing it along with the same people everyday. They also hold me accountable which helps me be consistent and motivates me to do my best.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about trying CrossFit? You will fail a lot, but that’s okay. CrossFit has taught me that it’s okay to fail because it is what is going to motivate you to do better. Failure motivates success. I must have failed 1k times trying to get my first kipping pull-up, but it was the most awesome feeling once I got it down. Now it motivates me to get stronger and try for more strict pull-ups and maybe a butterfly one by the end of 2018.

What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I joined because my fiance was really into CrossFit and I had always been fit and worked out at standard gyms, but was looking for something more intense and would take me to the next level with my fitness.

How have your feelings towards CrossFit changed from when you first started to now?

My feelings have absolutely changed since I started. I was scared, shy and out of my element, which is completely opposite of my personality. Once I realized how much of a “community” there was in the gym and how friendly and non-competitive it was, at least at my level, I really opened up to it and became more involved and excited about coming to class and learning and improving on new movements.
How has CrossFit helped you develop good friendships?
I have been extremely fortunate to meet some awesome people at this gym, one in particular who I have become very close with and I consider one of my closest friends, Tara. I enjoy having someone to go through the daily workout with, who I also relate to outside of the gym. Granted, most of the time we are talking about the workouts hahaha! We push each other to lift heavier and do more reps because we both know we are capable of so much. She encourages and yells at me and I encourage her to break out of her comfort zone. It makes working out all that much more fun because I know I am doing it with a great friend and I know we will have a good time…although, some days are better than others!
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about trying CrossFit?
The advice I would give to someone who is hesitant to trying Crossfit is that everyone has been where you are right now. Everyone has felt scared or intimidated to some degree. What is the harm in trying though? You may love it or it may not be for you, but you will never know until you try. In my opinion, if anything, know that you will always feel welcome and you will walk away everyday feeling like you accomplished the impossible, and you will feel great. Impressing yourself never gets old!
What is great about CFH? To me, this place is so much more than somewhere I come to get fit. I truly feel like I am part of a close community and when something happens to one of us, we all feel it in some way. We come together in times of need. We help each other out. We help out our community and we make a difference. That is so much more than just a workout. This gym has been there for me in times of need and I am very thankful and appreciative of that.
