Athlete Spotlight – Rachel A.

Spring has sprung at CFH. Along with longer days and warmer weather, springtime brings the return of outdoor running WODs. Some love them, others dread and avoid them. Last week we ran for the first time this spring, and Rachel A. hit the WOD, running for the complete workout without stopping or walking. For Rachel this marked an important milestone, a running WOD PR. Rachel’s story teaches us the important lesson that in order to overcome your weaknesses you need to tackle them head on. Amazing work, Rachel!

How long have you been a member here at CFH?

I joined in July but didn’t really come with any regularity until around Thanksgiving. I had a hard time getting mentally ready to tackle Crossfit and my ego stopped me from going for several months. When I first started, ANY RUNNING was something I dreaded. I would skip running WODs or find reasons to scale down the running distances always. Once it was consistently cold and we stopped running out side… I re-approached Crossfit and committed to it again.

How did you feel during and after hitting your running WOD PR?

This running WOD was an awesome way to see how far I’ve come – from the person who was too embarrassed to run because I hated being last to finish. Being able to keep running felt so incredible. I only ran a mile and it really isn’t all that impressive if you look at it too closely, but it made me see how much my mindset has changed! We hadn’t run in so long and at first I was so nervous when I saw the WOD posted, I almost didn’t come – but then I got excited! I’m not the same physically or mentally as I was last time we ran in class by a long shot. I’m ready for a summer full of running and progress at Fed Hill.

If you could go back in time and give yourself 1 piece of advice when you were brand new to CrossFit what would it be?

My advice to past me would be to let go of your ego and commit earlier. I didn’t like not being good at Crossfit and it kept me from coming back. But I could be so much closer to my first pull-up, first toes to bar etc if I had stuck with it from the beginning! Nothing I can do about that now except look forward to my next accomplishment.

Way to go, Rachel. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
